King Rama VI has been very busy re-structuring the country as the world was still reeling from years of bloody conflict. Siam itself had went through severe economic struggles as rice prices sky rocketed and the entire region was generally struggling economically. Instability and distrust of the government amongst those were not poor yet not of the elite was high. Unfortunately, these were key individuals necessary to fulfill and enact the fanciful ideas of the current King. Add a financial crisis a few years back and a failed coup by a number of officers of the military in 1912, and the chess pieces were all set in place.
At first, the announcement of the massive layoffs and pay cuts of those remaining in employ of the palace and the various tasks of the royal family caused massive uproar, primarily in the capital of Bangkok. What started as protests would lead to an outright strike, as some demanded they be given back their jobs and others demanded they have their pay not only brought back to pre-pay cut, but include a raise to deal with the rising cost of living. This would continue for some time, crippling the government and most basic tasks of the civil service. This would cause ripple effects all throughout Siamese life, mostly within the urban areas. This would cause further issues and further unrest, yet to be seen exactly what this would become.
As the country came to a relative standstill and the economic issues of the current crisis only increasing, it was only time until those close to the King became antsy. Rumors spread rapidly of some undisclosed family members talking semi-publicly against these recent reforms and radical changes. Removal of stipends and their servants refuse to work because they are going hungry? Utterly disgusting. As the strike grew to new heights, there was one distinguished individual who was willing to publicly come out against the King and his recent actions; recently retired Field Marshal Chao Phraya Bodindechanuchit. Angered at his forced retirement and the general direction of the country, he refused to sit on the sideline as the King let the country fall to anarchy.
Speaking of the military, the Field Marshal was not the only one who was not pleased with the current situation. A common disease of the Siamese people was the influence the military has over its politics, and this was no different. King Rama VI would know this more than anyone, having experienced a failed coup very soon after he was coronated. In the hopes of gaining a better public image, the Rama lessened or removed the sentences of many of the conspirators. While possibly successful in that regard, in such a time of instability those conspirators' aims had not changed. Such a high ranking ex-military man like Chao Phraya Bodindechanuchit publicly speaking against the King and rumors circling throughout the palace and the military is bound to not lead to anything good for Rama.
However, Rama VI's actions have not been hated by everyone. The pivot to providing many services to the more rural and agrarian regions has not gone unnoticed by those living in those communities. While many peasants and serfs still are not happy with the current situation and the rice crisis, they do appreciate the attempt by the central government to lessen their burdens.
