President Tomáš Masaryk stood at a podium surrounded by the journalists and his fellow politicians. He drew a breath and began his address to the nation.
"My People, the Treaty of Versailles has been signed and the Great Powers of this world have affirmed our independence. However citizens, our country is still young and there are many who gaze on our borders with hungry eyes. The Hungarians are yet to have peace with us and long for our Slovakian lands. We have 60,000 soldiers in Siberia fighting the red tide of Bolshevism leaving us with but 40,000 soldiers at home. We need more brave souls to stand watch at our borders for the next 18 months. Countrymen, we need 150,000 new recruits to train, help defend our borders, and improve our nation's infrastructure. It is at a time like this when a country needs ordinary people to put their country first and perform extraordinary action. Help us reach our goal and help our nation start with a strong stride forwards."
