How important is that first 7* Character?

For a new player, that is.
Is it worth going all-in to boost one character to 7* for the purpose of raid participation trophies?
It occurred to me that Biggs is going to hit 7* faster than my other toons anyway, so I thought, why not just spend a week or so dumping everything I can to get him to max?
Is there any downside to this plan that I'm not seeing?
