Moving on from Gear VIII

Is it worth it to spend guild currency or crystals on gear that's higher than gear viii? The guild purchases in particular seem like an atrocious conversion ratio.
I've got about 6,000 guild currency. I'm only spending it on Maul right now. We raid regularly so more is always coming in I just have a hard time convincing myself to spend 600 for 2/50 gear fragments.
