The helical gears were used to reduce gear noise in an automotive application. He is clearly worried about forthcoming failures because he realized that the gear box is operating outside its design parameters. The answer, throw more parts at it!
Getting it up to speed softly can be mitigated by slowly easing into the throttle and allowing to boat to come up to speed slowly.
IMHO the only thing the love joy coupler is going to do is introduce another point of failure.
