I was sitting in the cafeteria at school (college) today, eating fries and cramming for a Spanish exam, when a guy asked to sit down at my table. I couldn't really use the conversation just then, I was pretty visibly busy and am generally not very extroverted. I hate the way they section people off into large tables though, and since I didn't want to be the asshole taking a six person booth for myself, he sat.
Over the course of an hour, we talked. He had nothing really to be doing but talking to me, as far as I knew. I was busy scratching out answers onto my Spanish workbook. In time, it came out that he was gay, and that he was interested. Predictable twist: I'm not and I'm not.
I carried the conversation as far as it was going, awkwardly, lurching from one topic of discussion to the next. "Hobbies?", "School?" and other such things. Minutes could pass silently though, I really was busy and was just trying to be polite. When I said I had to go, he asked me for my phone number. It had been clear for this long what his intentions were, but I gave him my real phone number figuring he seemed like a nice enough guy to have for a friend. We were interested in the same things and I really make an effort to be friendly.
So I'm wondering now, did I do the right thing? When he calls I'm going to have to clear up the situation. I don't want to lead him on, obviously. I'm worried I've accidentally done that already. I don't know what it's like to look for a partner as a gay man, so I don't really have a personal context for dealing with this.
tl;dr: Gave my phone # to a gay guy, I'm not gay. Did I fuck up and how do I not fuck up?
Edit: Stahp downvoting in mah thread, I prefer my advice in circlejerk-format.
