finally got around to watching The Croods, felt like rambling about it a little
Post Body

spoiler warning for The Croods i guess

I did like a lot of things that were going on in that movie. It was actually pretty great to see a few lady characters with sturdy, muscular designs being physically active, jumping and climbing and picking up heavy objects and shit. Yeah I realize they were all supposed to be neanderthal people, but the mom and protagonist were depicted as reasonably attractive and intelligent as well as being very strong and active, I’ll take what I can get ok.

I’m pretty bored with the narrative where the overprotective father must learn to let his daughter grow up though. Kind of annoyed that in yet another story where the young woman is reaching adulthood and pushing boundaries, finding love and stuff, we have to spend sooo much time focusing on how the dad feels obsolete and has to learn to accept it. It’s become so cliche to do the “girl meets boy, father hates boy, father bonds with boy and endorses the relationship, everyone is happy" thing. Can we have less patriarchal manbaby tears and more women kicking ass, exploring the world, and saving the day please.

And they just had to squeeze in a couple of fat jokes and “don’t be such a girl" moments, the assholes. The parts where the dad hates on the mother-in-law and jokes about her dying were gross, stale and unnecessary as well.

Other than that it was great eye candy and all the hybrid pseudo-prehistoric animals were super cute: a fairly nice little family cartoon movie.
