How does fasfa work

Hey everyone, new student here! I’ll be starting my first term July 1st and I’m honestly confused about the payment of classes and what not. Does fasfa automatically pay for the classes or do they send you the money to manually pay for them online? I just receive my book voucher and I was told that I’ll receive that after the classes get paid but it looks like I got the voucher first and still owe on classes.
