How to get into kaizo?

I could probably beat most the original kaizo hack if I tried hard enough but how people beat hacks like 'grand poo world 2' is beyond me.

How did you learn to kaizo? Just trying again and again and again? How long do people usually need to beat a modern kaizo hack for the first time? Is it all just muscle memory specific to a certain hack?

I try to learn some isolated kaizo tricks atm. Needed ~40 minutes for the double shell jump, and consistently getting key jumps just seems impossible to me.
