The day has finally arrived, and I have finally, after months of waiting, been scheduled for a SIBO breath test at one of my city's hospitals.
Now I am on a journey to untangle exactly how much it is going to cost.
I have insurance with a high deductible that may or may not kick something in towards this.
My questions for the community, if you are in the US:
- How much did it cost you out of pocket? (can DM me, as financial stuff is personal, I know)
- How many billing codes were involved? So far, I've been given one and the nurse I spoke to thinks there may be a separate fee for the doctor to read it. No one can tell me if there will be an additional facility fee or some other way to fee the shit out of me.
Finally, a matter of opinion, are these tests worth it? My GI doctor will not combine my Xifaxan with anything else without a positive SIBO test. It makes sense, and neomycin has some scary side effects, but I've heard these are sometimes innaccurate? I am down to follow whatever restrictions I need to- I already eat a super restricted diet, I feel like I'll hardly notice, lol.
Bottom line, if this is going to cost thousands of dollars I probably won't do it, and if it costs around $1000ish I want to be sure it is worth it. I am not rich.
Update: Looking like it will be $125-150 after insurance. Not too be considering!
