I used to believe that Nichiren was a wise man whose teachings were corrupted by Ikeda and the SGI. But the more I read and researched his writings, the more of a NUT he seemed to be! This is what you can discover once you stop looking at these writings only through Ikeda's interpretations.

For example, I went to the SGI Library site where you can find the Gosho. I did a search, typing in "I, Nichiren" and found a plethora of delusional, maniacal rantings. No wonder the government wanted to get rid of him.

Here's a few "titles" he bestows upon himself:

I, Nichiren, am sovereign, teacher, and father and mother to all the people of Japan. Page 287

Letter from Sado

On the twelfth day of the ninth month of last year, when I was arrested, I called out in a loud voice, “I, Nichiren, am the pillar, sun, moon, mirror, and eyes of the ruling clan of Kanto. Page 302

The Swords of Good and Evil

However, you should rely on Nichiren as your staff and pillar. Page 451

Letter to Akimoto

I, Nichiren, am like the great comet of the Bun’ei era (1264), a disorder of the heavens such as had never happened in Japan before that time. Page 1016

If someone were to mete out such treatment to an actual messenger of his parents, could that person’s actions possibly be condoned? Yet I, Nichiren,am father and mother to all the people of Japan, I am their sovereign, I am their enlightened teacher! Should they turn against one like me? It is absolutely certain that those who chant the Nembutsu are destined to fall into the hell of incessant suffering. Page 531
