No doubt many of you want to rank highly because, well, it will make you more money.

Unfortunately, having this attitude only serves to cause you to work in ways that are detrimental to your site/content.

Myself, I am fortunate enough to have other sources of income apart from my website and, hence, I build my sites according to how I want them to be, rather than how they could best be monetized. And, in doing so, ironically, it actually outperforms the rest because, even if it doesn't, well, I honestly don't give a shit. I do what I want with them.

In short, I don't care if my sites don't make money because I have other streams of income, and, ironically, not caring actually makes me more money than sites (and their builders) that are conscious of their site's revenue/income.
