What’s the best controller for Streets of Rage 2?

I’ve loved my time with this game so far. It’s super intense and engaging, but comes at the cost of my left thumb. I currently use the standard three-button controller to play SoR2, but using the d-pad absolutely blisters my thumb because of all the inputs you have to do for moves.

I’ve considered using one of the fight sticks, but they’re a bit expensive and might not be my preference. Then I thought about the Triax Turbo Touch 360, but it seems too gimmicky to be useful. Bottom line: what controller should I use specifically for SoR2?
