Let me just start this off by stating that don't currently and have not lived on campus in the past, so everything I say about the quality of dorms is based on what I've been told by my friends and acquaintances.
In the past year, it sounds to me like the cleanliness and maintenance of the dorms and other buildings have plummeted. I've never heard of so many problems about the dorms as I have this semester. I'm really curious if it's either because of budget rearranging or because of the lack of students on campus during the last few online-only semesters.
With our new president trying to reinvigorate the social life of the campus, her administration needs to pay way more attention to this issue than they currently are. I don't understand the thought process of wanting to increase residents / have fewer commuters while also letting the dorms fall apart and become infested with roaches. I can't imagine people will feel motivated to stay in these shitty dorms all weekend instead of going home to the city on Fridays and coming back to campus on Sunday nights, especially when they already didn't before they got this bad.
The parking is also a bad situation for having commuters be more active on campus. Personally, I've never had a problem parking in South P. But I understand that if you're coming to campus for something you're doing voluntarily like a club meeting, taking the bus, or other things that are normally an inconvenience becomes another reason to stay home instead.
TL;DR - If President McInnis wants to improve the social life of the campus, she should fix the dorms that keep getting worse and the parking that's even more limited than previous semesters, and focus on making the campus a nice place to live and visit before insisting students who don't care about sports go to games.
