Happy LGBTQ Health Week! I work at HIV Alliance, an organization based in Oregon that specializes in HIV care and prevention. Ask Me Anything about HIV or other STIs, PrEP/PEP, or harm reduction.
Broadly, sexual health education in the US fails to adequately respond to and include the unique identities of LGBTQ people. Widespread stigma and discrimination of people who identify as LGBTQ furthers these health disparities by creating severe gaps in access to medical care and increased rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.
HIV Alliance was established in Eugene, Oregon in 1994 to support individuals living with HIV and prevent new HIV infections. We now provide HIV care coordination across 13 Oregon counties. Our prevention services include sexual health education; free and confidential testing for HIV, Hepatitis C, and other STIs; safer sex supplies; PrEP/PEP navigation; syringe exchange and safe syringe disposal; and overdose prevention and reversal.
We specialize in providing culturally competent care and information about HIV, Hepatitis C, and other STIs in an effort to build awareness and reduce stigma within our communities, and we consider LGBTQ communities to be a priority for HIV education and prevention services.Â
Ask Me Anything about HIV, Hepatitis C, and other STIs; how to reduce risks for transmission; PrEP (the highly effective medication for preventing HIV); harm reduction; or any of our programs.
