Made a similar post in r/rugbyunion, but thought it was also relevant here.
Super Rugby App - this is a no-brainer. How is it 2024 and we still don’t have an app for this competition? We have had to use sub-standard 3rd party apps for live scores and teams. Just make a clean, simple app with news, fixtures/results/scores, team lists, highlights, tickets, etc.
Team lists - post the team lists all in one place on Super Rugby social media. When I want to see the lineups for each team, I have to go to each individual team’s Instagram page to see it. Team lists now come out at a universal time across teams, so just post all the 23’s together side-by-side according to matches. The Shute Shield does this well.
Fantasy league - every successful sport has a fantasy league. It keeps the casuals interested in watching the sport every week and, more importantly, it gives fans a reason to watch neutral games. It also helps fans to recognise players that aren’t in their team.
Sunday arvo games - this is obvious. Family-friendly times, warmer temperatures and everyone loves an arvo game in the sun. May have a problem with potential 5-day turnarounds for some teams, but worth it I reckon.
United Cultural Round and jerseys - why are the Aussie teams wearing their jerseys and celebrating indigenous culture at different times to each other? Have a united Cultural Round across all teams, and properly celebrate it (NZ/FIJ too). The indigenous jerseys are always the best selling jerseys too, so I’m sure that NZ can make some clean Maori design ones too and they'll fly off the shelves.
Casual merchandise - the merch in Super Rugby is so expensive and unaffordable. Who can pay $130-160 for a jersey or even $80 for a training shirt? NRL/AFL/NFL are really good at partnering with brands like Cotton On/Mitchell & Ness/Best & Less to make really affordable, official casual merch with nice, clean designs and without all the ugly sponsors. https://www.nrlshop.com/collections/nrl-cotton-on . The vintage design shirts/jackets/jumpers are my favourite and are really in style now (they’re really popular in AUS). This also gets brand visibility in the public (no one really wears jerseys or training shirts to go out).
United broadcast - the broadcast is so divided either side of the Tasman. Aussie shows only talk about Aussie teams and NZ only talk about NZ. Introduce a show/podcast with AUS/NZ/Pasifika hosts and treat each team equally. I love the NZ teams but always have to catch The Breakdown and Aotearoa Rugby Pod to get my fix.
I feel like these are relatively easy to implement. What are your thoughts? What are your solutions?
Open player market - nationally aligned franchises are boring. Get money and players moving, creates interest, intrigue & drama that the comp is lacking.
