Tonight I showed up for my third overnight in a booking, and found a hidden camera pointed directly at the bed. The only reason I even noticed is because I needed an outlet to plug in my phone, and I was trying to determine what the cords in the outlet went to!! I actually heard a click in that moment, of a camera's motion sensor activating video recording, and looked to my left and spotted the camera hidden behind a plant.
The room is exceedingly tiny, and nothing but the bed is in its view ~ the other side of the bed is just a wall, and the dog usually sleeps on the cool tile in the hallway, so it was solely there to view me in bed. It is impossible to see the dog from the angle it was at.
I've stayed there two nights, and changed my clothes within view of the camera like 4 times.
I immediately unplugged the camera, called my partner to pick me up, apologized profusely to the doggie, gave him everything he needed, hid the key, and left without a word to the owner. I wasn't even sure what to say, and was shaking with anxiety.
I contacted Rover support to report it and get the booking cancelled. I have been petsitting full time for 2 1/2 years and have never had anything like this happen before! They were very understanding and escalated it up to their safety department. ((UPDATE: police report has been filed after some thought and reading through the comments.))
Has anyone ever had something like this happen before? I'm still so shaken by it ðŸ˜
Edited to add, since some are concerned about the dog's wellbeing: I would never endanger a dog. The Rover lady was never out of town, and visits the dog every day. This was an incredibly bizarre situation. It was actually this woman's mom's dog, in her mom's home, because her mom was in the hospital recovering from a surgery. The daughter lives only 30ish minutes away. She took care of the dog during the day but wanted to sleep in her own home at night with her own dogs, so I was only ever there 11pm-8am each night and we never ran into each other. I sent very long and detailed updates every morning, with photos, and sent texts whenever I came and left. The dog was anxious and hasn't been eating without his owner, so she didn't want him to be alone. I took this request last-minute to help her out even though I'm sick, the meet & greet had been fine... I never expected this to happen. She is probably already with the dog now.
