Post Body

We'll try to keep a spot here for all the relevant links you'll need to plan a day (water levels, park open/closed, water temp., etc.).

Is clothing allowed?

Yes, but then you'll be a Textile and you really don't want to be a textile here.

Let's start off with this. 2020 was a record year for 'textiles' and 2021 2022 2023 showed no signs of changing this. While this is a clothing optional beach, wearing clothes the entire time (esp. down at the water) makes those that are there for the nudist aspect feel uncomfortable.

In Oregon, there are only two clothing optional beaches and literally hundreds of miles of clothing required beaches. If you want to visit Rooster Rock and have no plans on going nude, and no one in your party plans to, please reconsider your visit.

Please read towards the bottom of this looooong post for more about this and other do's and don'ts

General infoπŸšπŸš½πŸ•›πŸ“…πŸš«

Oregon State parks website has maps, fee info, open/close times, rules, and even a FAQ section.

Another really great site roosterrock.org was recently created and the same group also has a corresponding Instagram account @rooseterrockbeach. Definitely check these out. (We contacted them for approval to add this here).

Water levels πŸ’¦

I'm taking these from the Bonneville dam (Site Number: 14128870), however, there is another spot down river located just west of Portland you could use as well. Obviously, don't compare the two site's water levels as their gauges are different.

Historically, August is the perfect time of year not only because of the warm sun, but also because water levels are great. But note, water levels vary greatly and are a combination of BPA letting more/less water through the dams for fish and electricity with what is available coming down the rivers and mountains. At the Bonneville dam, High was 17.2 feet, Low was 9.7 feet with an average around 13 and a 'swing' of about 3 feet on average. (Use the Historic water levels link below and play around).

Currently, this is what is to be expected. You can see that historically, spring runoff occurs April to June where water levels peak as high as 27.5 feet. Mid-July to Sept., are the best times of year to go as far as water levels are concerned.

Dashboard: USE THIS SITE, enter in dates, enjoy!

Also, check out the previously listed roosterrock.org and their Instagram account for any info they may have on these. They may contain reviews by people at RR at any given time.

But, can I cross to the sand bar? Generally speaking, when the water levels are below 17 feet, from the Bonneville site used above, it's okay to cross. I say, "Generally" because the sand shifts, the water levels change up to a foot per hour,. But if you read the chart and don't see it climbing upwards fast, AND the water is below 17' or looks like it will stay below 17', you should be good.

Weather🌞🌧

Step outside. Generally, anything over about 77-degrees with sun is going to be really nice.

Wind ReportπŸ’¨

Windfinder is a great source

Where to go🌎

u/HeeledOver shared this area as the 'Family Friendly Area'. However, you will find families from there to the 'island' and on the north part of the bay.

LGBTQ party place is where the music is. Basically, hit the family friendly area, take a right along the water going east on the southern part of the bay until you find the crowd - you'll usually hear the music first, then a lot of guys.

For a quiet, more solitude place: Walk past the Family Friendly Area, into the water, and wade through across the sand bar until you hit the 'island' (not really and island). You will still have people walking past but it's not a steady stream.

Where to have sexπŸ‘«πŸ‘¬πŸ‘ πŸš”

This is the controversial part and I'm sure we'll have at least one or two old-timers showing up to argue anything we say... Yay. So, if you want to risk having to tell your neighbors that you're a sex offender, go for it. Yes, it is illegal. Yes, Rooster Rock was traditionally the place to 'cruise' and have sex in the open and no one would care. However, that was before places like the Hawk, Privata, Sanctuary, The Velvet Rope, Grindr, Tinder, etc., existed. Things change, welcome to post-2000, thankfully. That said, you will find plenty of people saying that it still occurs, most notably where the LGBTQ party place is and immediately surrounding areas are, which is great. Go there if you're willing to risk it.

People are known to splash water on people having sex in public there and there have been fights in the past (which are some hilarious stories). There are rangers are stationed at Rooster Rock and they patrol the area (it's actually a small park for the staff there and they are out A LOT). And of course, there are also families there.

Dogs?πŸ•

Yes, dogs are allowed but must be on leash at all times in the clothing optional section. There is an off-leash area in the clothing required section - though, quite a ways away from the nude areas... DO NOT allow your dogs to roam into other's peoples space. We know Fido is 'the best dog ever' but not everyone enjoys having Fido tear through their area spraying sand all over, begging for food, knocking over drinks, or playing keep away with their belongings. And I can't believe we have to say this, but clean up after your dog... Way too many landmines on the trails.

Music πŸŽΆπŸ“»πŸ”Š

Lots of people complaining about people showing up with loud stereos. Remember, be respectful. If there is already a group with loud music playing, don't sit next to them and expect them to turn in down. On the flip side, if you see people enjoying the peace and quiet, don't be the asshole that sets up their stereo and sets the volume to '11'.

If you know of more to add, please add it below and we'll get it put in here. If you're here to argue the 'where to have sex', look elsewhere, it's beating the dead horse from the 90's.

ROUND 2 - The Everything-Else-You-Need-To-Know - a bit more in-depth.

This was gathered from a culmination of discussions with some copy/pastes with edits.

But Do I Really Have To Go Nude?

(To emphasize the start of this whole post because it is by far the most popular topic...)

Do you have to go nude? Short of it, no... but "Textiles" are increasingly unwelcomed since 2020's invasion. There are many facets to this answer but one of the most compelling is: There are hundreds of beaches throughout Oregon and SW Washington that require clothes, why go to one of the two clothing optional beaches if you're just going to wear clothes?

To put it another way; A consistently heard, and sound argument to this is, "why do you enjoy wearing clothes knowing that it makes those who are nude feel uncomfortable?" Do you really want to be that person who does this?

*But there are exceptions:

"But my partner is going to go nude but I'm not, will I still get dirty looks?"

We don't believe so. We think a lot of people here understand that and are actually happy that you are supporting them.

"I'm a woman, is topless enough".

General consensus (here, CB, and other discussions online) is that this is fine.

"Can I, a man, just wear a thong?"

Read through this post

We all get the allure of going to a nude beach, we all understand the nervousness of taking off our clothes for the first time in public, however, there are simply too many "textiles" right now for people to go and just watch. Either take the plunge or wait until you're ready - or go on a slow weekday to try it out first. Or possibly even find some nudists to go with and help you feel more comfortable.

Is It Okay To Have Sex at Rooster Rock State Park?

Copy/Paste from u/3IDontKnow's post here

  • If we want Rooster Rock to remain a nudist area, we must all adhere to the rules. If we want them changed, let's change them. But for now, it's illegal.

  • It's distasteful. There are families here. Watching the three people having sex next to the trail as families walked by was beyond trashy.

  • If you don't want to be on a sex offende[r] list, it's strongly advised that you refrain from putting on a show.

  • Join a swingers group, sex club, or get some friends if you really want to put on a show for others. Rooster Rock is NOT the place for this.

How NOT To Be A Creep, ... and "Can I pick up women here?"

  • First, let's call this guy, "Jim". Jim walks between us and the river: no biggie, 0 of 5 in the creep factor.

  • "Jim" then proceeds to pace and stare at us for the next 10-15 mins until we turn towards each other and my wife/gf/partner covers up: 3 out of 5 in the creep dept.

  • First smile at us by "Jim" is okay, subsequent others every 20-30 seconds, while pacing and staring earns a solid, 4 out of 5 in the creep dept.

  • Next, we have "Rian". "Rian" goes out of his way to walk by us and then stare as he passes. Hard to blame him but since his boundaries are clearly in question; 2 out of 5 creepy.

  • Rian on his next pass goes out of his way to walk up to us and start talking. Usually depends but averages 2 out of 5.

  • However, if our body posture and other factors aren't saying, please approach us, then Rian is just being No Boundaries Rian and it's 3 out of 5. There is a difference here between just being friendly and approaching hoping to score better seats/hit on us.

  • Rian not leaving when we politely keep the conversation short or flat out tell him, "we're here just to enjoy the beach with each other" or even the rarely used, but used nonetheless, "time to go Rian"; 4 out of 5 creepy

  • Next up is Todd. First we have the 'I'll wait in the bushes or nearby for male partner to leave woman alone', Todd. Todd is a regular at this and usually waits until I'm 20 yards away before beginning his almost sprint to my wife who is now all by herself. He then proceeds to "annoy the shit out of her while I'm temporarily absent; 4 out of 5 creepy.

  • Todd also likes to circle around us a few times, staring, grinning, and stroking and touching himself; 5 out of 5 creepy.

  • Todd is also the same one that often times, after the aforementioned 'circle and jerk', go into the bushes and itch himself violently; 5 out of 5 creepy.

  • Fauxtographer Carl: the closer he gets the more obvious it is that he's taking pictures of others without permission and he goes to 5 out of 5 on the creeper scale. Great way to get into a fight.

  • The duo of Stinky Stacy and Filthy Frank. Stacy approaches us by herself at first and gets to know us a little. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, "OH, Hey! It's my husband/boyfriend/partner Frank!"... And suddenly the friendly chat is now them turning the conversation over to couple swap. 4 out of 5 creep. Swingers are fine, this technique is not.

  • In-Your-Bubble Barney Rubble: Barney sees a wide open beach with few people around and decides to set up 15 feet from you.... Doesn't stare, smiles occasionally, but makes you think why the 100 yards to the east and west that are complete devoid of others weren't good enough for him: *2 out of 5** creepy. 3 out of 5** annoying/weird.

  • "The bros" These are the frat boys wearing board shorts that "accidentally" toss their footballs and frizbees into my area then try to play cool and chat it up when they come to get it. I'd give them a low creepy rating, maybe a one or two, but an annoying rating of five out of five. 5 out of 5 creepy. (from u/3IDontKnow)

  • Cock Ring Richard. Wearing cock rings near families is definitely a 5 out of 5 creepy, and illegal (see below).

  • In the same spirit we have Caged Carl. Save the sex stuff for appropriate places. Rooster Rock and Collins Beach are not the appropriate places.

  • Pistol Petey: You know him, the "Salesman" with the towel over at Collins but apparently RR has one now, too... Harmless but what the fuck? 2 out of 5 creepy.

  • "The Greeter". There are a few guys at that hang out on the main trail as you walk to the beach that set up facing everyone who enters, they just lays there wearing a smile and are usually the first bit of nudity you run across as you walk down. Harmless: 0 out of 5 creepy.

Cockrings, Buttplugs, and more!

Discussion here

Short of it, Oregon law deems these illegal to show in public places. However, what goes on in the gay area and away from the family areas, you'll probably would be fine with.

Piercings? Who cares.

There's always a beach. Just how much of it, where it's good at, and can you wade over to the 'island' are really what people try to figure out.

This time of year is always a crapshoot to plan ahead for as we're in the spring lull; melting snow pack and seasonal rains aren't that predictable.

Just a couple things to note, too. (1) The water changes hourly, literally. Never more than a foot/hr as federally regulated and it's controlled by the dams. You really don't notice it but it does. (2) The wind can really suck through there. I'll add the link for the wind report above in the morning.

My advice, go and plan to just check it out. If the weather's nice and you find a comfy spot, bonus.
