Fascia and soffit

Hey all, I had a roof done and the contractor is saying that the fascia and soffit it is ready for caulk and paint. I was in the attic today and noticed some pretty large gaps where they replaced wood. Are these gaps normal and able to be filled with caulk? Is it normal for them to come back and fill this later? I'm just concerned they're trying to skirt by and not do this right.
