Ok. In most contemporary paranormal romance books, if the pair are a human and a nonhuman, the 'creature' partner is either a vampire, a werewolf, or something more-or-less the same by a different name.
Any romance recs where the creature partner is something weird? Either some really obscure mythological creature or something entirely original for the setting? Like with what the White Wolf RPGs started putting out once the stock monsters had been thoroughly explored.
Bonus: Any where the nonhuman character actually thinks and acts in a somewhat inhuman way? In most of the paranormal romances I have read, Vampires think and act like bored, broody humans, while werewolves act like abnormally tempermental and/or cuddly humans, depending on weather they are closer to wolves or golden retrievers. While it is about as far from a paranormal romance book as you can get, there is a book, Blindsight by Peter Watts, that does a good job of this. The characters are all genetically and cybernetically modified humans (one is even called "Vampire" colloquially, though he is... different). The book threads a delicate needle, making their thought-processes and actions uncanny and slightly inhuman while also being internally consistient, logical (for a given measure), and to some extent even sympathetic, despite the cognitive gulf between them and the reader. Any books that do something similar in a fantastic romantic context?
Doublebonus if the inhuman partner is as weirded out by the human at first as they other way around.
