A grovel where they didn't deserve forgiveness?

Post Body
I just finished Smokey by Sam Crescent and it's the first time I've ever hoped they wouldn't end up together. The grovel was good but didn't makeup for the actions the MMC made.
Anyone else read a book with groveling and felt the character didn't deserve forgiveness?
In Smokey, He has her beaten and was going to kill her because he thought she betrayed him and his MC. He didn't even give her a chance to talk and didn't look into it. He had no evidence other than pictures that were suspicious anyway.
