Something more scholarly than Mary Beard's SPQR?
Post Body
I want to read up on the scholarship on the period before 300 bce, i.e. Early Republic and the monarchy, but before that, I need to pick up something less scholarly, more run of the mill stuff that is intended for the general readership. Scullard's books look good but I am unable to get my hands on one, and Beard's book is just too light in historical info. Any suggestions?
