The last men

“I thought it was just a cold…”

In the years following 2027, this was the sentence that nearly every wife, girlfriend, sister, mother and daughter uttered as they watched the men they loved most perish. The virus known as IFY-27 is an Influenza variant that only affects human males. At first, symptoms present themselves as a mild cold. Within days, however, the victim’s health rapidly deteriorates. As the virus chips away at the Y chromosome, it displays symptoms similar to severe radiation poisoning. Breathing becomes difficult as the lungs suffer from clots and blockages. The skin becomes red and inflamed before eventually just rotting off. Blood begins to seep from the eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Within 4-6 weeks, the victim will succumb to the virus.

Within 3 years, 99.7% of the male population was dead. Governments, workforces, education were now nearly 100% female. Many women viewed this as a time to set things right, wanting to break free of the warmongering and failed patriarchal policies of the generations of men that came before them. It worked for a few months. But unfortunately, women were human too. The same diplomatic mistakes that plagued humanity for thousands of years continued with no end in sight.

There has been some success with cloning and in-vitro fertilization using another woman’s DNA, but as time went on, these methods became less effective and numerous birth defects began to become apparent. Men became a vital resource, as it was often the easiest, safest, and most efficient way to ensure a healthy and stable population. As a result of this, many countries rushed to secure their own population of men while sending raiding parties to capture a rival nation’s population of men. Unfortunately, many men have died and will continue to die because of these raids, further reducing their numbers.

To make matters worse, many women around the world took the plague as a blessing in disguise. They believed men had oppressed them for millennia and had finally reaped what they sowed. These cults began targeting men and the facilities that housed them, hoping to rid the world of male influence. Now most countries are fighting on two fronts. Attempting to keep their men from falling into a rival nation’s hands, while also attempting to eliminate these radical cults before they can do any real damage.

I am one of the (un)fortunate few men that have survived. I was only 12 years old when I witnessed my Father pass away from this awful disease. Unable to help, just watch through the plastic tent the doctors had put up in a fruitless attempt to stop the virus from spreading. After burying my Father, my Mother brought me to a remote cabin in upstate New York, hiding me from the Government, Cultists, and the disease. It is now 13 years later and I have now just finished burying my Mother. While I wish I could mourn her loss in peace, the fact that I am running low on supplies is rather worrying. I’ll have to figure something out…
