Was there any place better than the trade quarter of a town?

Here, men walked around with pockets full of things that went 'click' and 'clank', and the women wore bright and shiny things that dangled from their ears or from their wrists as light as a rain drop and as pretty as a diamond. The stalls had a vast assortment of items, from loaves of bread to loads of gems. And even the floor contained a few valuables, carelessly dropped from a table or slipped from a pocket.

It was in this trade quarter that she felt most comfortable, even though the people there were all so much bigger and so much taller than her. Being so small would work to her advantage, and so would having such fine fingers as could slip into a keyhole to turn a lock. She went through the crowd like a breath of wind, touching no one, but touching their pockets frequently. When she put a hand into their clothing, it was done so carefully that if noticed they would think it was their own hand in there and not that of a pickpocket's. That was the easiest bit of her job, and plucking things from belts too, but taking earrings and necklaces was a bit more than a trifle.

No one had noticed her, except occasionally to look down and sneer at her. These were elegant people, and they did not like the sight or the smell of a woman with dirt on her face and calluses on her palms. She did not think herself dirty, no more than anyone thought a bunny rabbit was dirty, and a bunny rabbit certainly had more germs on it than she had on herself. She was cute, and rather charming when she wanted to be, when one got to know her a bit.

Finished with a day's work, she went home. And 'home' was down a few tight alley ways, across the sewer, around the pig pen, and beside the cantina. She lived in the dirtiest and smelliest of places, where all the city's poor and starving were gathered. She was raised in this place, and she might die in this place too. But, she would not die empty-handed.

"What have you been doing? You've been out later than usual," her sister said, always looking out for her.

"Doing some shopping," she said, and she put her hand into her pocket and netted out some of her treasures. She smiled up at her sister, very proud of what she had done.

"I told you, no more stealing! We have to stick to our plan! We're leaving on a ship tomorrow morning, and if you get caught they'll kill you!" Always looking out for her, but always nagging her too.

"You're not the only one who can work, you know!" she protested, and she put the things back into her pockets.

"My 'work' is legal, carrying boxes at the port, serving tables at the cantina, running messages from here to there," it was legal, but it was not enough to feed two mouths, or even one. "If you want to steal, then steal bread. The guards won't kill you over bread... usually."

"Whatever," she said. "I'm knackered. Goodnight," she went to bed in a small space in the corner of their one-room home, and her sister let her be for now.

Hello! I'm Raven, a 27-year old writer and roleplayer of many years. Today, I'm looking for someone for a character-driven adventure story.

I am a native English speaker, and prefer you be too, or at least proficient enough in the language. I want literacy, and that means both detail and some length to our posts. If you are not literate, not detailed, and cannot write at length, then this will not work.

I want us to both contribute to the worldbuilding of our setting. I would most like a science fiction or fantasy setting, but we can figure out the details together. We can figure out what fantasy races there are, or alien species. We can figure out what kind of weapons are available, and the level of technology. We can name some of the important factions and countries. And so on.

I would like us to take time crafting our characters. Describe them in detail. Create an interesting backstory for them. If necessary, we could create in-depth character sheets for them.
