The cowboy hat sat atop of Johns head. The smoke from his cigar rose up and formed a small cloud under its brim. As the sun went down the cartridges in his shotgun began to glow. The brimstone rounds were a new invention from the local academics. They said they had tested to be just as effective as natural sunlight when used on vampires.

He could hear screams out in the distance. Whether it was deserters or fools it made no difference. Their end still came in the same terrifying way. A gnashing of teeth as your body is drained of its blood. The left over bones and muscles being tossed to the side in ragged bits.

It was his job as sheriff to make sure the vampires didn't come to close to town at night. The mages on the wall put up a good light shield, but if they were taken down somehow it could put a hole big enough in the wall to let them in. He got up and cleared his throat at the thought of it. His new constable was set to arrive soon and he wasn't looking forward to it. After his last ones death at the hand of one of those demons he tried his best not to take a new one.

Walking out to the porch he saw the soft glow from the wall. Just bright enough to show it was on but dim enough to let the towns residents sleep. It would soon be time to go from door to door. A new tradition made to ensure there was no new thralls that had lied about being bit.
