That is, In the Court of the Crimson Kings by S. M. Stirling.
It's the second (and, so far, last) book in a series called The Lords of Creation, that is basically a modern take on old planetary romance novels - the kind of tales Edgar Rice Burroughs used to write, more or less.
Except, in this case, the roles that the human hero and the alien princess would normally play in such stories end up reversing over the course of the plot, and there's also some discussions about biology and society that would make Ursula K. Le Guin proud - not something I'd usually expect from S. M. Stirling, but whatever. XD
