This is probably silly, but I have a hobby in that I like to learn ancient technology and be able to replicate it on my own for sort of a "post-apocalypse" prep.
I've recently gotten into metallurgy, and I'd really like to do some true primitive metalworking with copper.
My plan is to find a location in Michigan in which I can go take a mattock, prybar and shovel and go dig up some float copper or other copper ore, take them home, smelt them down into viable copper bars, and then smith them into something useful.
There are tons of places in the UP offering copper mine tours, but I don't want to buy my copper from some gift shop. I legitimately want to dig it up myself.
Does anyone know any good locations where this could be done? I'm not finding a lot of conclusive information on my google searches and I would really welcome the input.
