Can you still use the steam controller through Epic games launcher?

I've used an Xbox controller for my entire RL career which has been since 2017 but someone offered me a steam controller for pretty cheap and I've never even heard of one until now. If it does work is it hard to set up? Would anyone advise it over an Xbox controller? And are there any drawbacks?
Sorry I'm advance if any of these questions were dumb.
