Playing Online Question

I just upgraded to Rivals. I hadn't played RB4 in about 6 months, lost interest due to no online play. I still need to read up on what the crews do. Is there a mode where you can do quickplay with others online like we used to be able to do in RB3?
Is the only way to do this through crews? And, they do what, reset after each week? Can you do a solo crew and run through the challenges alone? Thanks in advance. If anyone has any other tips, please let me know.
