Am I horrible at this game?

I’m playing on standard and my longest run is 18 mins. I always get to the fields and die instantly
I’m a huge fan of borderlands which has made me really love this game. I only have about 5 hours now but I feel like no matter the build I get absolutely donkey punched as soon as I get to the fields.
Edit: if you took the time to reply, thank you. This game and its community is just fantastic. I can’t wait to see how far I can get today!
