James Gunn's Peacemaker has come and gone, and what a show it was. In its 8 episode run, Peacemaker is a clear example of the Gunn style unshackled, combining outrageous, crass, and sometimes dry humor with genuine moments of heart, drama, and character work. It successfully (though not always perfectly) balanced its wildly different moods without creating a tonal whiplash for the audience, a feat easier said than done.
With that in mind, here are a few suggestions (aside from the obvious, which is James Gunn's extensive filmography) for anyone trying to scratch that Peacemaker itch until Season 2:
If there's 1 thing Peacemaker wasn't afraid to do, is mock bigots and their dumb-fuck ideologies. To that extent, few films have gone as far to mock the stupidity of racism, while simultaneously not being preachy about it, as Mel Brooks' classic, BLAZING SADDLES.
If you prefer your mockery of bigots with a hint of drama, Taika Waititi's coming-of-age dramedy, JOJO RABBIT, might be right up your alley.
Peacemaker may be a socially-awkward murder machine, but he's trying to do better. However, it is not easy to overcome traumatic life experiences and a terrible upbringing. If you're looking for another story about an emptionally-broken man trying to overcome his past, and also weaves together drama, comedy, and action surprisingly well, HBO Max's BARRY might be right up your alley.
Peacemaker may be filled with compelling characters, but for many, Eagly stole the show. While the world of cinema may have plenty of heartwarming (and sometimes heartbreaking) tales showing the bond of people and their pets, one that might've gone under the radar of plenty of people is the 2019 Willam Dafoe flick, TOGO.
For the animation fans out there;
MY ROOMMATE IS A CAT tells a pretty chill and heartwarming story about the Budding relationship between a first-time pet owner and a stray cat.
GOLDEN KAMUY is perhaps one of the most underrated anime series I've watched in recent years. Based on the award-winning manga of the same name, it effortlessly combines outrageous humor with some of the character work in animation or live action.
