managing combat early game?

I've just made a new colony with naked brutality and only have one colonist who has decent stats in melee and ranged, maybe 7 or 8. But he can not kill anything? He has a legendary greatbow but can he as fuck land a shot to save his life, literally he was downed my a turkey and died a slow and painful death.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
