ELI5: how do I do combat without a killbox and losing vital pawns every other fight?

Post Body

I put a few hundred hours into the game a few years ago and I'm looking to get back into the game. It looks like kill boxes are being discouraged. Can someone please help me understand combat? I never really understood what weapons were best as I progressed through the game, which melee weapons to use and why. I feel like any time I don't use a killbox or funnel, I lose a colonist every other fight and most fights hospitalize people.

Is there a good YouTube tutorial or article I can that can finally explain to me how to be decent at combat.
