How long do you usually play a colony?

I’m currently just over 2 years into my current colony and I started thinking, how long should a colony last? When do most people give up/“win”? What do most people consider a win?
I think with my current colony, I want to do the classic ship escape because I’ve never actually completed it before, and this is the farthest I’ve ever made it
