Running Retropie on a Linux PC: Do I have to compile everything?
Post Body

I've got an old Atom netbook running xubuntu and I'd like to install RetroPie on it. As it's a PC, retropie_setup.sh wants to download all the source code (for EmulationStation, Retroarch and the cores) and compile it.

Last time I tried this, compilation took the majority of the 12 hours needed. Updates weren't exactly quick either because the source code would be downloaded and then compiled from scratch.

Outside of installing Batocera instead (and then trying to work out how to get a desktop environment on that), is there any I can run xubuntu and RetroPie and not have to compile everything?
