I’m finishing up the first year of my post-bacc as a non-traditional student and I don’t have any experience in medicine- volunteer or otherwise. I am a CPA and every job I’ve had up to this point has been in accounting.

My advisor told me that now is the time to get some clinical experience to show I am serious about medical school and not just checking off some boxes at the end. Putting that aside, probably the biggest career mistake I have made was blindly jumping into a field without any idea what it entails, and I really want to avoid doing it again. I honestly don’t know if being a physician or even a career medicine is the right path for me, but I figure the only way to determine this is by actually getting a job in the field. I am struggling at this point to reconcile taking many more classes without stepping foot in a hospital and beginning to find out.

The problem is that all my experience is in auditing and tax and I am unsure how to best alter my resume to show that I am interested in a career in healthcare. I moved my education section to the top, which highlights that I am in a premed program and have altered some of my job descriptions to show what little overlap there is (I did VITA after college and some of the audits I worked on were for nonprofits).

I considered dropping some of my experience entirely, but then I just look like a NEET.

There are some great hospital tech jobs that I am interested in, but I feel like I am blowing my chances by applying with a resume that I could probably still use to get hired at Deloitte. These jobs don’t require much in terms of experience or certifications, so they seem perfect for me. I had a volunteer opportunity lined up to shadow doctors this summer, but it fell through due to COVID and I have not seen much else for volunteer work.

A lot of things are lining up in my personal life where this would be a great time to make such a drastic career change; I just think my resume comes off as confusing. Any advice would be helpful. I should also note that some of these applications don’t allow for a cover letter, so sometimes my resume is all I have to explain my situation.
