Looking for Speakers/videographers at Press Conference!
Post Body

Last night at the planning meeting we came to a consensus on doing a news conference. This will be the opportunity for anyone to hop on camera and explain what we’re doing and why; this is primarily for the local TV news stations and independent media to catch some footage of the organizers.

The press conference will be Monday, July 1st, 2pm, at O’Bryant Square. Speakers should arrive early, at about 1:30, to make sure we’re all on the same page.

If you’d like to get involved, that’s great! Please come to a planning meeting or post your interest below, or send me a message.

This document provides a good overview of how public relations works: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rWT_pqqG40U8RUEPdJ0ri9be9lE2G-d4-rVe6ZDX6Yk/edit?pli=1

Here’s my tips about a press conference:

  • Keep your statements brief: at most, the local news will use 30 seconds of whatever you say, so really hone your message down. In all likeliness, a local news agency will use 8 seconds (about one sentence) of what you have to say, so pick your words carefully.

  • Appeal to the audience: unfortunately, people at home don’t care what you think, so don’t tell people what you think, explain to them why this issue impacts them.

  • Write your thoughts down ahead of time, then review, read it out loud and practice, practice, practice. Hopefully you’ll rehearse your statement enough times that you won’t need to read from something at a press conference, because eye-contact is important, even on television.

  • Dress to impress: Imagine that you’re going to be on television, what is the best way to appear?

  • Some media may want to interview you or ask questions: be sure to do some studying of current events, and don’t try to answer questions you’re not sure about, it’s perfectly acceptable to say “I’m not sure.” The worst possible outcome is trying to answer a question you don’t know, and coming off sounding like a dishonest idiot.
