After the last episode, I just want to say how happy I am that this show not only gives its female characters and their stories/arcs/etc their due/respect, but that it's amazing that they're making the overarching theme this season parenting/motherhood, and the variety of different experiences people have with it.
Women get such a short stick in sci-fi/fantasy/spec fic in general so the fact that this show not only fully leans into the stories of the female characters but actively centres them as main themes? That they get to exist as themselves and not just as devices to advance the male character's storylines.
Like, Kate was often relegated to being Max's mom/Ben's wife last season, but this year we've gotten to see her delevop and find out about her desires and goals outside of being a mother/wife. I also love that they focus so much on the friendship between all the women. Like, none of them are pitted against each other and their relationships with one another are multi-layered, complex and an important part of the show.
This might seem like the bare minimum but when it comes to sci-fi, women so often don't get the same depth and focus as male characters. It's been changing, luckily, but there's still a long way to go and getting to see such a good example of it in a show on broadcast television is pretty big.
Like, Resident Alien is a good, solid show, I've enjoyed it a lot and the female characters are a big part of why.
This is more of a ramble than anything concrete.
