I rent main unit on main floor of bungalow. Basement is rented. We share front door as entrance. In the basement, there is a space which leads to front door of basement apartment and the shared laundry room.
Basement renters have converted the space leading to their door (and area to access the shared laundry room) into a hair salon as home occupation. My guess is the girl tenant is a hair stylist who doesn’t want to pay for a commercial space anymore.
I walk down on a Saturday to do a load of laundry, and have to walk through someone getting their hair done. Every hour or 2, there is someone at the door. The tenant does her best to greet them at door so they don’t knock or ring bell.
I went out to do groceries and there was a client parked in my dedicated space. I have a bench in the entryway, and saw a customer sitting on it while waiting their turn. It’s becoming a little much.
I appreciate that I work from home (office job) at times. But I don’t have incoming clientele. I signed a lease knowing there would be a basement tenant, but never thought I’d have to deal with it becoming a commercial use, let alone awkward for me to do laundry.
Thoughts? Leave it be? I have always been a good upstairs neighbor and try to keep harmony with people downstairs. It could be worse as they don’t party and aren’t loud at all at night. But this all feels odd. Say something to landlord (who lives in another province)? It has gotten to point that I’m looking at possibly leaving on account of being annoyed in my own home….
