CA renter: advice on ending lease early without paying to break lease
Post Body

I’ve lived in my current apartment unit in Southern California since March 2023. No complaints, I love it here. I’ve decided that after living in SoCal my entire life I’d like to move and experience somewhere else and have chosen a city to move to. The problem is that I decided that I want to move a month after renewing my lease until June 2025. I understand that I signed a lease, spare me the comments about the obvious. My lease states that we can break our lease at any time if we pay 2 months rent (would be around $5600 for me) I’m here wondering if any renters (especially in CA) have had luck going to their property management and coming to an agreement to end a lease early (I’m aiming for Jan/Feb 2025) if they provide several months notice and/or provide a suitable tenant to take over the remainder of the lease or sign a new 12 month lease. I have a friend who would pass all the rental requirements who is interested in taking over my lease until June 2025 but I’m looking for advice on how to propose this to my property management in a way that they’d be amenable to.

Worst case scenario is that I’m stuck in an apartment that I love in a coastal, Southern California city until next summer. Poor me lol. Any advice would be appreciated though since I’m ready to move on to my next adventure.
