Wood burning fireplace OR electric?
Post Body

I just want opinions!

My husband and I are thinking about what to do. Just bought this 80s built home in Canada and were told the fireplace is unusable. Previous tenants fished an extention cord through and hooked up a mounted TV.

The wood burning fireplace would need to have the interior sheathing fixed and then it would be back in working order. The chimney has been otherwise maintained and cleaned yearly through the condo association we're in.

Alternatively, we could look into closing the fireplace chimney up entirely and switching to electric, probably on both sides of the wall for fancy points. At the same time now we would have an unusable chimney stack. Maybe could use it for increasing outlets in general? We have a huge deficit of outlets!

TL;DR What can you do with a chimney if you no longer use a fireplace?
