Okay this is bugging me. I'm finding about a million posts on this sub talking about how Renata is an "aggressive Enchanter" or something of the like. But, if you look at her kit she's not really an Enchanter in the way we typically use the term. She has two moves that huff allies. Her W and her E. And her E is primarily a damage/cc ability that happens to have some utility.
The actual defining feature of her kit is CC. 3 abilities including a big teamfight Ult.
The thing is. There's already a name for "Enchanter-like character who is focused on aggressive CC over buffing".
The way league classifies support casters is actually split between two classes in the "Controller" category. Enchanter...and Catchers.
Catchers are supportive utility champs who focus on CC and lock down over ally-buffing. They tend to be defined by high area control. Many have teamfight CC ults (Morgana, Zyra, Neeko). And a good number (Morgana, Rakan, Thresh) have a strong Ally buffing ability.
If you look at the official list, it has Bard, Morgana, Rakan, Neeko, Blitzcrank, Thresh, Zyra, Pyke. Some other champions like Swain and Lux support functionally belong in the category too. It's a diverse list, but defined by champs with high impact CC who work well in support (and some in APC) because CC scales well on low income and is good I'm a duo lane.
And my question is. Why aren't people treating Renata like a catcher? Hell, in lane she even has a hook on her Q. That's a Catcher hallmaker right there
This factors into the debates about playstyle and build. We have a decent grasp on how Catchers build, for one thing. Most of the champs listed above are able to go enchanter items (half of them frequently Shureilias Battlesong), AP Items (Everfrost, Ludens), or just buy odd tank items so they can stay up and spam abilities longer.
Looking at the comparison though. I will say this. While some of those champions have long cooldown abilities, I don't see a single one who doesn't have a shorter cooldown, more spamable power (Thresh Hook, Neeko Q, Blitz E, Swain Q). If I had to suggest a change to make Renata smoother, it would be rejiggering E to be her "low CD move".
