National RQ-158 S - Advice needed for a total newbie to reel to reels
Post Body

I have been given this portable R2R for free along with the case, microphone and lots of old reels. It likely has not been turned on or played in around 10-20 years. Everything looks to be in really good condition but it's not quite working.

It powers on okay but the spools do not seem to spin at all when I try pressed fast forward, rewind or play. I can hear a motor run but nothing visible spins. I thought this could be the belts? As someone that is not very savvy with this stuff how realstive or achievable would it be for me to find and replace the belts and anything else that could be wrong? I'm not even sure how to open it up to find out more just yet. Does anyone have any knowledge or advice they can share.

I can grab more photos as needed. I wasn't sure what to take.

There are some reels that may have sentimental recordings so I would love to get it working. I'm just not sure if I should put time into it or just consider buying a working machine instead.

One other thing I noticed. The manila mentions a capstan sleeve which is taken on and off to change the speed. I think this is missing as I can't see anything on the capstan to remove right now. Is that something that might be easy to source. Is it necessary?
