I know people rag on Michael Malconian a lot, and it's understandable to a degree given how he wasn't a seamless replacement voice for Caboose and his first impression wasn't the greatest, but comparing his performance in Death Battle to this new PSA? He's getting the hang of it and I want to compliment that.
Sure, it's still not one-to-one and it likely never will be, Joel's take on Caboose was such a unique voice after all, but Caboose in this new PSA sounds way less forced than he did in Death Battle.
Malconian's first appearance as Caboose sounded like he was trying too hard to do a phoned-in Caboose impression, but here it comes across more as if he's trying to engage in a natural conversation in a voice that roughly sounds like Caboose. It's a lot less awkward now. And I can only imagine that the voice will continue to be refined with each opportunity Malconian has to play the character. Give him half a year of PSA's and I'm sure we'll warm up to it a lot more.
Frankly, if he was just less rough on his t's and slurred/stuttered some of his words every so often, I'd say Malconian's Caboose would be pretty authentic overall. He feels a lot closer now than he was a year ago. Regardless of that though, I'm optimistic about how he'll make the character into his own. Every voice actor taking on a legacy role deserves that opportunity.
Kudos, my guy. This'll be one hell of an uphill battle but you've got my support.
