Nipple Rings/Free nipple reduction

Has anyone had their nipples pierced before their reduction ? Did you keep them after or take them out completely ?
My surgeon suggested I do a free nipple reduction and skin graft a nipple instead because of my current size, does anyone have experience with that ?
