"You can be the big spoon all you want. I'm the soup spoon and that's the end of it!"
Edge play. What does that mean to you? How do you define it? Recently I've seen people referring to bondage as edge play, due to the chance of nerve damage. I'm not so sure I agree.
[Note 1: I'm not claiming those who suggest bondage is edge play are wrong. It's quite likely I'm wrong]
[Note 2: I happily accept bondage, if done wrong, or poorly, could compress nerves]
[Note 3: I'm not including suspension or stress positions within this definition of bondage.]
[Note 4: I'm bored with these fucking notes already!]
Do you class yourself as an edge player? Why? What is it that earns you inclusion on The Roll of Non-Gendered Edgelords?
The definition of the term I've been indoctrinated with is edge play is kink that is extremely risky, with the "edge" in question seeming to refer to the edge of what can be deemed Safe, Sane, and Consensual. But, in my experience, kink world is wildly inconsistent about what "edge" is.
However, it's been my observation that how mainstream something is seems to impact how it's classified. A high risk behavior that's commonplace might not be seen as edge play, while an uncommon activity with minimal risk is.
The Wikipedia Entry states that ageplay was once seen as "too extreme for consensual activity" and by the 2000s was considered edge play. Now you can't swing a dead cat in a kinky space without hitting a little, who promptly tries to use it as a stuffy. And I rarely hear it referred to as edge play.
So, it feels to me that while we say edge play = beyond/on the edge of SSC, the label is more frequently applied to things people see as taboo, weird, or otherwise icky.
