Hello, I thought I would do a highly original post and rank the Red Queen books. Just to make it more fun, I’ve broken up all the Broken Throne novellas into their own separate entries. Spoilers (obvs) follow, and the ranking may or may not be influenced by the amount that Maven appears… :)
10: Glass Sword – I think this is the only one I didn’t really enjoy. I found most of the plot to just be a bit padded out and I wasn’t awfully interested in the whole recruitment of new bloods. Funnily enough, although he’s not in it much, I found Maven to be the best thing about it. Even though he’s not physically present, you can almost feel his dark presence through Mare’s lingering thoughts and feelings for him.
9: Steel Scars – I wish we’d seen more of Farley and Shade’s relationship develop rather than it just leaving off just before they started becoming close. It was fine otherwise.
8: Fire Light – I liked it, but that’s about it. I’ve never been all that invested in the Mare/Cal romance, so this story didn’t do all that much for me.
7: World Behind – I liked seeing the perspectives on a different, more normal Red and Silver as opposed to the nobility or rebel we’ve seen before, but other than that, I though this was fine.
6: Red Queen – Ah the original, and while I don’t really like Mare here, I did enjoy the general world building and that Maven twist upset me so much in the best way possible.
5: Queen Song – Coriane is so sweet here and her psychological deterioration thanks to Elara was genuinely shocking to read about.
4: King’s Cage – Glad to see more of the Mare and Maven dynamic and while I don’t ship them, I think the deeper understanding Mare gains of Maven during her captivity and dealing with them after she gets free was gripping. I think I squealed in joy when we got an Evangeline pov so that gives this book brownie points. On the downside, I didn’t like Cameron’s sections.
3: Iron Heart – Evangeline is one of my favorite characters in the series, so I loved that we got a story revolving around her. Her and Carmadon’s interaction was sooooo good and I really enjoyed how Evangeline and Elane’s relationship was showed here, as one Evangeline was more than willing to give up the chance at becoming a queen for.
2: War Storm – A amazing finale to the main series, especially with the multiple perspectives we get. Seeing Maven’s thoughts for the first time was a bit frightening yet made him sympathetic and Iris’ viewpoint was an interesting choice, one I really enjoyed.
1: Fare Well – I LOOVVVEDDD the perspectives we get on Maven here and see just how warped his mother made him yet he still loves his Cal enough to push him away so as to not give him open. That and his whisper of goodbye made me tear up a bit. Cal visiting his brother’s grave was also a nice touch, and shows that, despite everything they’ve done to each other, there was still a bond between Cal and Maven.
