I stood before the rack of brightly colored skirts and costumes that had arrived from Boston on the train. I lifted a set of bright red ruffles and inspected the hem closely, running it between my thumb and forefinger. Ms. Adeline had done an impressive job creating the clothes, but then, I knew she would.
I let the skirt fall back to the rack and smiled, imagining what a line of women dressed in this finery would look like on the fresh, wooden stage. Long, pale legs kicking over the heads of the men slamming whiskey and watching, while the piano rang through the smoky air with a lively jaunt. I smiled to myself, imagining the faces of the men, the sweat glistening from the women, and the money that would pour into my saloon.
I looked over to Ms. Fisher, the women who had served my family in Boston, but escorted the clothes and other supplies I had purchased in Boston. She needed a clean start as well. She had loved my brother from his 16th birthday, but being of a “lesser status” in life, my father saw fit that they would never be together. I knew that my brother’s wedding earlier this year made it impossible for her to stay in Boston. I was thrilled that she accepted my offer to join me in Rectionville.
“These really are some of Ms. Adeline’s finest. Thank you for bringing them to me.” I smiled to the woman, who looked a little worse for wear from the long train ride, but the spirit in her eyes made it clear she was excited.
“Yes, Miss. She did a wonderful job, knowing they were for you.” I noticed her cheeks brighten as she brushed some dust from her long, dark skirts. She kept looking around the saloon, then back to the costumes. Her smile faded slightly as she met my eyes. “Ma’am…” There was hesitation in her voice. “What is to be my role here?”
I looked from her, to the skirts, then around the saloon. I smiled wide and shook my head. “Oh, Natalie. I didn’t mean to imply that you were to be a working girl here. I would like you to do whatever you want.” I moved closer to her, lifting one of her hands with mine and looking into her brown eyes. “Ms. Fisher, you are not a servant, you are my friend. I brought you here to help you create a new life.” I paused, making sure she was focusing on my words. “You are welcome to do anything here that you are comfortable with.”
Her smile returned, reaching into her eyes and creating a smile. She turned to look at the deep green felt on one of the Poker tables. “I…Can I learn to deal Poker.” Her eyes returning to mine with anticipation.
I laughed at her request, imagining the demure maid learning to deal Poker and cheat the drunks from their gold. I nodded. “Of course, Natalie. I would be thrilled to teach you.” I squeezed her hand softly, making sure she knew that she would be given every opportunity I could give to bring her happiness.
“But first, we need to hire some security and a few women to provide entertainment before we open.” I looked to the costumes again, smiling at how eager I was to open soon.
