I'm confused about posts I see in this subreddit vs what I actually see in game, help me pls.

I keep seeing comments about how people say they game was ruined when skills stopped being class based and that you can swap them between characters and I don't understand it. Like people saying warriors can have mage abilities and stuff like that. Are they talking about something you can change in the menus like can I start my game as a warrior with flight or are they complaining about how anyone can pick up anything out of a chest. I realize as I'm writing this that's probably what it is cos I can't find any other explanation but it's been that way since I started playing so I'm not sure lol explain pls.
