Returning player; state of weapons?

Hello. I started playing this game a bit when it was first made open beta, but then broke it off and played other games. Coming back now so I wonder; what is the state of the weapons currently? Is the balance good now? What weapon is best? (or are they even balanced enough for there not to be a "best" weapon anymore?) What do people usually use/what is your go-to weapon?
